Eli’s Barn Attack and Death
How to Flirt with A Naked WerewolfEli’s Barn Attack and Death brings his long-hidden bid for pack leadership into the open and ends it in a violent confrontation at a locked barn. By targeting Mo, who is pregnant with Cooper’s child, Eli hopes to destroy Cooper emotionally and remove the obstacle to his own rule. Instead, Mo’s resistance and the arrival of Cooper and Maggie expose the scheme and turn the barn into the site of Eli’s death.
Causes and Background
The attack draws on a history Cooper had already confessed to Mo. As alpha, he had been expected to make decisions for the village, its families, and the pack, which also defended its territory against threats. About a year after he assumed leadership, an invading pack came from outside Vancouver. Its alpha, Jonas, seized Maggie and threatened to snap her neck unless Cooper surrendered the valley. Cooper tried to offer the newcomers a place there, but Jonas refused.
When the fighting began, Cooper killed all twelve wolves in the rival pack. He remembered doing so with unusual clarity in wolf form and could not treat the dead as mere enemies: to him, they had been people, just as members of his own pack were. The killings left him with nightmares, guilt, and an inability to remain with his family. His departure also sharpened the leadership conflict. Eli later described Cooper’s fairness and concern for equality as weakness, and saw Cooper’s continued presence as the reason he remained second-best rather than leader.
Eli’s grievance was not simply a response to Cooper’s return. He admitted that he had spent years working toward power and considered himself born to lead. He had been sending information to the rival pack for months, helping it prepare a coup, then pretending to share the pack’s shock when its plan went wrong. When that failed, he turned to attacks on humans, including Susie Q and the hikers whose remains were scattered at their campsite. He had also followed Mo and Cooper on a camping trip, hoping for an opportunity to take Mo. Abner’s death, which Cooper had blamed on himself, was another consequence of Eli’s campaign.
The Barn and Eli’s Exposure
The immediate search begins with uncertainty about Cooper’s whereabouts. After the hunting party leaves the area, Eli and Mo reach the barn. Eli uses a rusty pipe wrench to break the padlock, and the two enter the dusty, dim building, where motor oil lingers in the air. On a wooden trestle table lies a blanket-covered body. Eli pulls back the covering: the dead wolf is too light and lean to be Cooper. Mo’s relief at finding that the body is not her partner gives way to confusion about why Eli brought her there.
Eli’s reaction makes the scene’s purpose clear. He overturns the table and rages that the hunters have killed an ordinary wolf instead of the intended target. His eyes turn completely yellow, his cheekbones sharpen, and his transformation begins with a shadow moving over his skin. He strikes Mo with a hand already becoming pawlike, flinging her into a tool chest. The attack transforms what seemed a grisly search into a trap.
Eli then abandons the pretense of loyalty. He presents himself as a leader whose potential Cooper has kept unrecognized, arguing that Cooper was too concerned with fairness when the pack needed strength. He also explains that the rival pack’s assault was meant to advance his own coup: he had supplied information for months but found the invaders inept and was forced to act surprised when their plan failed. His confession connects his ambition to the earlier valley crisis and reframes the attacks on humans as deliberate steps in a sustained effort to provoke Cooper and seize control.
Mo’s Resistance and the Fight
Mo attempts to fight back despite the physical imbalance between them. When she understands that Eli killed Abner, she launches herself at him, aiming for his eyes. He catches her by the throat and lifts her from the floor; she claws at his hands, kicks him in the stomach, and tries to trip him. Eli drops and then strikes her again, driving her head into a cabinet. The danger is sharpened by her pregnancy: after the blow, Mo instinctively protects her belly and worries about what the struggle could do to the baby.
She asks why Eli did not simply attack Cooper directly. Eli’s answer makes Mo’s life part of his plan: killing her, he believes, will push Cooper past the edge because Cooper will not want to live without her and their child. When Eli shifts to all fours and blocks the exit, Mo holds a wrench between them. She reaches it again after Eli hits her, bringing it down on his head; he punches her in the jaw. Her attempt to brain him does not stop the attack, but it gives the barn struggle its defining asymmetry: Mo has no comparable strength, yet keeps looking for an opening rather than surrendering.
Eli lunges at her in wolf form. Cooper bursts into the barn and shoulders him away, taking a defensive position in front of Mo. Maggie follows and attacks Eli from behind, biting his neck. Eli throws her into a wall; she gets back up and stands with Cooper. Cooper shifts back to human form and puts himself between Eli and Mo, asking Eli to direct his grievance at him instead. Eli insists that Cooper’s existence prevents the pack from following him, and that he has taken the leadership he believes he was denied.
Mo tries to use the distraction to reach a tranquilizer gun on the wall. The canister is empty. She swings it as a club, but Eli turns toward her and attacks again. Maggie pushes Mo into a safer corner while the two wolves circle and test each other for openings. Cooper charges; Eli goes for his leg, then catches his rear haunch and drags him across the floor. Cooper breaks free and drives his head into Eli’s stomach. As the fight moves toward the barn’s entrance, Cooper keeps trying to draw Eli away from Mo.
Death and Aftermath
Eli repeatedly uses the presence of Mo and Maggie to distract Cooper. Maggie, in turn, keeps rushing Eli, biting and clawing at him even after Cooper warns her back. When Eli pins her and turns toward her, Cooper springs at him, knocks him away from his sister, and brings him to the ground. He bites Eli’s neck. Eli’s final whine ends as blood spreads on the grass outside the barn.
Once the fight is over, Cooper separates from Eli and positions himself between the dead wolf and Mo. Maggie lowers her head against Cooper’s side, and he licks the top of hers. Cooper and Maggie return to human form; Cooper, blood across his face and neck, goes to Mo and wraps his arms around her, pressing his face to her stomach. The gesture closes the immediate threat while keeping the child Eli had intended to use against Cooper at the center of the aftermath.
Eli’s death does not erase the damage of his campaign or the history behind Cooper’s return. Maggie explains that Eli was nearly the last of his family line and had cared for his sick mother, Aunt Billie; the pack would take over that care. Cooper is left staring at the ground, but Mo tells him not to torture himself with guilt or regret. He agrees, embraces her, and asks her to marry him and raise their baby with him. The proposal follows the killing without making it a simple victory: the pack’s immediate danger has ended, while Cooper must face the consequences of having killed again and choose a future with Mo and their child.
